A new scheme entitled Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) has now been established.  Before anyone starts with an "Oh no not another one..." moan I should explain that the aim of SSIP is to allow the majority of the different schemes on the market to mutually recognise each other via a "deemed to satisfy" policy.  Simplistically this means that if, as a contractor or consultant, you successfully pass the exercise for scheme A then you do not have to also pass scheme B as long as both the schemes are part of SSIP and recognise each other.  This should save the industry £££'s in the duplication of paperwork and management time. The membership of SSIP already includes the majority of the more recognised safety procurement schemes such as:

Constructionline
CHAS
Eurosafe UK CDM Competent
Exor
Facilities Services Group
SMAS
Altius

Just to keep everyone up to date with what is happening regarding the SSIP forum.  This is of course the new initiative to cut down the amount of time and money spent by the industry in pre-qualifying suppliers on stage 1 of the competency exercise as outlined in Appendix 4 of the CDM Regulations 2007 ACoP.

Today I attended the official launch of SSIP at the Royal Festival Hall in London.  The event went better than could be expected and what was particularly pleasing was the support that was given to it by the HSE.  The HSE are fully behind SSIP and by using an accredited SSIP assessor all Clients and Contractors can be secure in the knowledge that they are meeting the competency requirements the CDM Regulations and in doing so are discharging their legal duties. Here at Eurosafe UK we are one of a small group of accredited SSIP assessors and would be delighted to assist organisations with the management of their supply chain.  More details can be found at http://www.eurosafeuk.co.uk/cdm-competent/

More on the SSIP assessment scheme launch yesterday from Construction News.  Nice to see that this great cost saving initiative is being heavily supported by HSE.

is such a good idea.  Cheesy

I know the HSE supports it...but i hope the rest of the industry will. Uts a long time coming and contractors will undoubtedly be glad to hear they wont need to keep submitting the same documents and paying out so much money to get an approved status.

Why would people NOT want to use the scheme is my question
